Gum Health & Periodontal Care
Here to help you feel confident in your smile
Welcome to the Periodontal Care department at Dartmoor Dental. As an award-winning clinic, we provide dedicated care for patients managing gum disease and more complex concerns — both within our practice and through referrals from other dentists.
Our periodontal care is led by leading periodontist Shaun Hodge. Known for his welcoming gentle manner and clear communication, Shaun helps patients feel at ease, informed, and confident in their care — particularly those who may feel anxious or uncertain about their gum health.
Gum disease — also known as periodontal disease — is one of the most common conditions we see, often developing quietly over time. Many patients are unaware they have it until it begins to affect their comfort, confidence, or the long-term stability of their teeth.
What is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist with advanced training in the health of the gums and the structures that support your teeth.
Their focus is on diagnosing and managing gum disease, helping to stabilise and protect your natural teeth over the long term. They also play an important role in treatments such as dental implants, where strong, healthy gums are essential to success.
What is gum disease (periodontal disease)?
Gum disease is a common condition caused by a build-up of bacteria around the teeth.
In its early stages, it may show as redness, swelling, or bleeding gums. As it progresses, it can begin to affect the deeper supporting structures — including the bone — which can impact the stability of your teeth over time.
The early stage (gingivitis) is often reversible. More advanced gum disease (periodontitis) can’t be reversed, but it can be carefully managed and stabilised with the right care.
Signs you may benefit from periodontal care
Signs you may benefit from periodontal care
Gum disease doesn’t always cause pain, which means it can often go unnoticed.
You may benefit from a periodontal assessment if you’ve noticed:
Bleeding when brushing or flossing
Persistent bad breath
Gum recession (teeth appearing longer)
Sensitivity around the gums
Food trapping between teeth
Teeth feeling slightly loose or shifting
Even if you’re not experiencing symptoms, regular assessment can help identify early changes before they become more complex.
